As someone in the construction industry, you may find yourself feeling stuck in your job from time to time. Maybe you’ve been doing the same thing for years and you’re looking for a change. Or maybe you’re new to the construction game and you’re not sure how to get started on the path to becoming a skilled tradesman. Either way, it’s important to continuously expand your skillset so that you can stay ahead of the curve and keep your job interesting. Here are five key ways to do just that.

1. Listen and then ask questions. One of the best ways to learn is to simply listen and observe those who have more experience than you. This is key. Remember that pride will not improve your construction skills and can be extremely dangerous on a job site. So, stay humble, sincerely listen to your coworkers, and ask questions when you don’t understand something or when you want to learn more.

2. Seek a mentor. A mentor is someone who can teach you the ropes and offer guidance when you are feeling lost. If you don’t have a mentor at your current job, seek out someone who has the experience you desire and is willing to share their knowledge with you.

3. Add to your skillset with continued education. There are many ways to do this, but one option is to consider taking some classes at a local community college or trade school. You could also investigate an apprenticeship program, which would give you on-the-job training while earning a wage.

4. Narrow your focus. Once you have some training under your belt, narrow your focus in your chosen field. For example, if you’re interested in welding, become a certified welder or sheet metal engineer. Specializing in one area will make you more valuable to your current or potential employer.

5. Practice mindfulness. Construction work can start feel repetitive because, well, it is repetitive! So, it’s important to stay focused and present when you’re on the job so that you don’t make any mistakes that could jeopardize your safety or the safety of those around you.

If you’re feeling stuck in your construction career, there are plenty of things you can do to expand your skillset and stay ahead of the curve. From seeking out a mentor to taking some classes, there are many ways to keep learning and growing in your field. So don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and explore all that construction has to offer!
